The worst way to prove herself on the job would be to fall for her captain.

Firefighting has been Captain Joe Mendoza’s passion since the days his firefighter dad let him climb on the trucks. When the chance for a promotion arises, he’ll do whatever he can to secure it. Accepting the chief’s request to take the newest hire, Chief Peligni’s daughter, under his wing is a given. What Joe doesn’t anticipate, though, is the way Faith storms into his life and becomes a monumental temptation.

Faith Peligni may be the first female in the department, but she’s not interested in making waves. She’s determined to fit in as just another firefighter. However, being a woman and the chief’s daughter, she has to work twice as hard to gain half the respect. She burns for that respect, and she’ll take help from no one—least of all the sexy, dark-eyed captain who sends a spark through her with just a look.

As their attraction billows to inferno levels, they’re both faced with high-stakes decisions. Can they find a way to have a workplace romance without their careers going up in flames?

Forbidden boss-employee, age-gap love

There are a lot of layers and nuances in this particular story.
Faith is fighting an uphill battle, in her mind, to earn her fire squad's respect based on her own capabilities, despite being the first female firefighter in the department and the Fire Chief's only daughter. She simply can't admit the attraction she feels for the hunky Captain of her squad. Joe is just as reluctant to acknowledge his attraction to his boss/mentor's daughter. It is improper and unprofessional. And that is ignoring how it feels like a betrayal of her dad's trust in him.

But admitted or not, the attraction IS there. Exchanging confidences about issues that affect the job continues to nurture that connection, and expands to more involvement in the personal family issues.

I really liked that communication was present and professional decorum maintained from the beginning clear thru the story. The characters balanced each other well, and restraint in the various power dynamics was handled with respect. Plus watching Faith deal with her parental issues gave a lot of insight to her evolving and maturing relationship with them.

I purchased a copy of this story on Amazon and voluntarily chose to share my review.
